Grandma’s Apple Betty

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup unsalted margarine melted
  • 1 1/2 cup bread cubes day-old
  • 4-5 cup tart apple slices
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp table salt
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup water

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Mix melted margarine with bread cubes.
  2. Combine the apples with sugar, cinnamon and salt.
  3. Place 1/3 of the bread cubes in the bottom of a greased 2-quart casserole pan.
  4. Cover the bottom of the pan with half of the apples.
  5. Repeat, then top that layer with the last third of bread cubes.
  6. Combine lemon juice and water. Then, pour this mixture over everything in your pan.
  7. Cover and bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, uncover and continue to bake for 30 minutes more.
